Removing more moving parts from computers

For over 50 years hard drives in computers have remained largely unchanged. They are much smaller, and as such they have also seen a number of increases in speed through the last 20 years. Moving more into the mainstream, solid state discs or SSD’s, have begun to make a move into the mainstream as Intel and other companies compete for our dollars with these new hard drives. An article over at igadgetlife.com shows some very graph heavy analysis of SSD’s vs. older hard drives. The bottom line is in every category there is a little improvement. In some, like read speed and write speed, the gains are sizeable. Another example of the potential of these drives is shown in this youtube video and gets bonus points for Napoleon Dynamite music in the background. On the extreme end this youtube video, shows 24 SSD’s performing as one drive. At about 2:00 in the video, the gains of many of these drives can been seen in its awesome glory. This, however, is an extreme example because 24 of any drive is going to cost a lot of money and will perform monster feats in computing. In fact, in some cases, these SSD drives cost more than double their moldy old hard disk drive counterparts. The only con right now is price. These SSD’s are better performing, much more durable when moved around, and consume less power. For many people these pros heavily outweigh the con. I’ll take 10.
